About this Course Module
Substance abuse problems are commonly experienced by those who have
experienced trauma. This course discusses the complex relationship
between trauma/PTSD and substance use disorders. Topics covered include
assessment, common issues and their implications for treatment, and
empirically-based treatment considerations in traumatized/PTSD
individuals.
Goal: This course provides a background for
understanding comorbid PTSD and substance abuse. It provides an overview
of practice guidelines, assessment, and treatment issues related to this
dual diagnosis.
Objectives: After viewing the presentation, the participant will be able to:
- Relate the complexity of the interaction and rates of PTSD and its comorbidity with substance abuse
- Implement current practice guidelines and assessment issues related to PTSD and substance use
- Examine treatment goals and problems when working with this dually diagnosed population
